History of Frozen Custard

Who doesn’t love frozen custard? Frozen custard (in some places also referred to as ‘soft served ice cream’) is basically ice cream with egg yolks added on it. It is denser and usually stored in warmer temperatures unlike ice cream. Originally this cold dessert is thought to have originated in New York. It was in 1919 that a couple of ice cream vendors found that adding egg yolks to normal ice cream would give a smoother feel and would keep the ice cream colder. They changed the recipe on their machines and it was an immediate success. They sold 18,460 cones in their first weekend. And boy are we happy they did.

Later on, during a fair in Chicago, the dessert was introduced to a wider audience. It was no different than in New York. The popularity was immediately spread throughout the country, especially the Midwest. Milwaukee takes proud in being called the capital of frozen custard. They take this really seriously, and lots of tests are performed to make sure the machines produce the best custard possible. It was in Milwaukee where many of the frozen custard chains existing today, were born. Many of these chains have existing shops in Orlando as well. So if you want to get some really nice frozen custard but don’t know where, below is a list with the best places you can find.

1. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers can be found on the Vineland Avenue. The place is really clean and sleek and the atmosphere is always really friendly and nice. It is located directly across the Orlando outlets, so you will always find many people eating. The prices are moderately low and the food tastes great. Apart from the burgers, Freddy’s known for their creamy custard.

2. Ritter’s Frozen Custard

2560 FL-50 #114, Clermont, FL 34711

Ritter’s Frozen Custard is a family owned business operating for almost 30 years. They run stores in a couple of different states and are known for their frozen custard. You can find the place on the East Highway. All the custard and cones are made daily so they are as fresh as they can be. They also come in lots of different flavors such as chocolate, pistachio, blueberry etc. If you don’t find your favorite flavor, you can order it in advance and they will make sure they will have it when you are there. The restaurant is clean all the times and the staff really make you feel at home. They are animal friendly, so you can keep that in mind if you are traveling with a pet.

3. Culver’s

3148 N Orange Blossom Trail, Kissimmee, FL 34744

With more than 100 stores all over the states, it’s easy to see why Culver’s is a favorite. You can find the one in Orlando in the North Orange Blossom Trail. They are almost always busy, but you can be sure you will be served in a timely and courteous manner. The menu features many choices including burgers, sandwiches, soups, salads and our favorite frozen custard. The food is great and the desserts are delicious. The frozen custards comes in many different flavors but we recommend the chocolate one. It is always fresh, creamy and tastes heavenly.

4. Andy’s Frozen Custard

4625 St Johns Pkwy. Sanford, FL 32771

Andy’s Frozen Custard is another great place you can visit if you are looking for something sweet and cold. You can find it in 5381 International Drive. You will certainly be satisfied with the clean yet modern look of the place. It’s big and shiny and although busy at times you will always find a place to eat. You can order inside the shop or in the driveway. The menu is pretty big and the prices are much more reasonable than the other places. If you are a custard fan, then this is the place for you. You can create your own or choose one of the ready made flavors. They also offer a mobile app in which you can get some great deals and discounts, so if you are planning on going more then once you can check that out.

5. Jeremiahs Italian Ice

Jeremiahs Italian Ice is the last place on our list but it’s one of the best nonetheless. If you are looking for a dessert after your lunch or dinner, make sure to check this place out. They offer ice cream, gelato and frozen custard. You will find almost any flavor you want and the servings are really generous too. Be warned though; if you try them once you might get hooked!
