Best Pie Shops in Orlando

Where did pies come from?

A pie is a sweet dish, made of pastry dough casing that contains various sweet and delicious filling like fruit peels, dry fruit, cinnamon to name a few. Pie is one of the oldest dishes and its history goes back as early as mankind knew how to make the dough and started experimenting with different dishes made out of the dough by baking it or stuffing it with available ingredients. It was one of the best inventions obviously. A pie is not necessarily a sweet dish. The Romans used to stuff their pie with a different kind of meat and seafood and spiced with pepper salt. Many in the US think Pie as an American dish, made popular during thanksgiving.

Hot Chocolate, Orlando

Best Hot Chocolate Shop in Orlando

Where did hot chocolate come from?

We are all familiar with the cravings for a cup of hot chocolate, especially in cold weather or after some winter activity such as skiing. But few of us know about the origins of this beverage and let me assure you, it goes all the way back.

Chocolate beverages can be traced back to the Mayans and the Aztecs. They were creating this beverage by mixing the cocoa beans, chili peppers, and water (there was no sugar back then). When they were conquered by the Aztecs, they were forced to pay taxes in cocoa beans. That’s right. The Aztecs found these beans so astonishing, they started treating it as money. Only the wealthy people would drink this beverage and it was often served in a golden cup. They were very bougie, to say the least.

Best Gelato Shops in Orlando

History of Gelato

As the world started becoming more like a seamless global village with the influx of masses across countries, the one thing that traveled along was the local cuisines. In the late ’90s, the Americans tasted the Gelato for the first time, as introduced by Haagen Daaz, but it did not strike a ball with the consumers. Americans loved their scoop of Gelato during their visit to Europe. This trend was picked up by Food giants Nestle and Unilever. They soon realized the rising popularity of the frozen dessert and started backing the introduction of Gelato with the correct marketing strategy. Youngsters and moonstruck cupids were used as a marketing gimmick to introduce Gelato to a larger consumer base. Over a period of time, Gelato is now available at more and more locations in a wide range of flavors. This ice cream alternative is made purely out of dairy, unlike ice cream.

Frozen yogurt, ice cream, toppings

Best frozen yogurt in Orlando & by Disney

Where does frozen ice cream come from?

As the name suggests, frozen yogurt is a frozen dessert made out of yogurt, sometimes mixing with nondairy products and is another option to icecream like sorbet. It is high in tart and low in fat. It is one of the oldest foodstuffs known to mankind. It traces its history to early civilization in Turkey when fermented milk was stored in sheepskin to conserve it. It passed through a lot of evolution across different civilizations. The modern age yogurt was first introduced in the 1970s by HP Hood in New England. Then, it was popular by the name of Frogurt. It later caught popularity with the gym-going fitness crazy guys, who found yogurt as a good alternative to ice cream because of its low-fat content.
It’s a kind of staple diet for people across Europe and is rapidly becoming popular in parts of Asian countries as well as becoming an integral part of the breakfast cereal. World over, frozen yogurt producing companies have launched this dessert in all the imaginable flavors and attractive packaging.
In America, the per capita consumption of yogurt is still much lesser as compared to European countries like France and Germany, but in the last 3 to 4 decades, the consumption has increased exponentially and is still growing which shows the popularity frozen yogurt enjoys because of health benefits attached to it.
Let us now quickly list, five shops which deal in Frozen Yogurt in Orlando, Florida. The listing is completely random and not on a ranking basis.

5 BEST Frozen Custard Shops Foodies Must Try! ORLANDO

Ice cream, Cone, Custard

Best frozen custard shops in Orlando & Disney

History of Frozen Custard

Who doesn’t love frozen custard? Frozen custard (in some places also referred to as ‘soft served ice cream’) is basically ice cream with egg yolks added on it. It is denser and usually stored in warmer temperatures unlike ice cream. Originally this cold dessert is thought to have originated in New York. It was in 1919 that a couple of ice cream vendors found that adding egg yolks to normal ice cream would give a smoother feel and would keep the ice cream colder. They changed the recipe on their machines and it was an immediate success. They sold 18,460 cones in their first weekend. And boy are we happy they did.

Later on, during a fair in Chicago, the dessert was introduced to a wider audience. It was no different than in New York. The popularity was immediately spread throughout the country, especially the Midwest. Milwaukee takes proud in being called the capital of frozen custard. They take this really seriously, and lots of tests are performed to make sure the machines produce the best custard possible. It was in Milwaukee where many of the frozen custard chains existing today, were born. Many of these chains have existing shops in Orlando as well. So if you want to get some really nice frozen custard but don’t know where, below is a list with the best places you can find.

Carnitas Uruapan Restaurant, Best Carnitas in Chicago!

Carnitas Uruapan

Did you say Carnitas?!

Yasss Carnitas! You best believe these are good! And you better try them!

Located in Pilsen, this little gem we found through a video on Facebook. Considered the best carnitas in Chicago, we HAD to try for ourselves.

Here is the breakdown:

Service: 4/5. The small restaurant was packed! And kept being busy the whole time we were there. They took our name down for a table. Stood in the middle of the restaurant in a line of people for maybe 10 minutes for a table to clear. Sat down and were serviced immediately. Very quick turnover which was nice because my two kids tagged along.

Appetizers: 5/5! We got a free chicharron and a side of taquitos. Man, I must say. The taquitos were bomb!! Crispy, freshly made taquitos. Chicharron was very crispy as well and hot.

Carnitas: 5/5. This is the main reason we came here. And let me tell you, we were not disappointed! The Carnitas were juicy, tender, and full of flavor. Not greasy and perfectly seasoned. So worth the wait!

Meat, Uruapan, Pilsen

Condiments/sides: 5/5 As soon as you sit down, they give you everything going need to build your taco. Cilantro, onion, salsa, peppers, tortillas, and a side salad made with cactus. Everything is made fresh and in house.

carnitas, Chicago, Cilantro

I would give this place a solid 5/5. The verdict is that this was the best carnitas I have ever had! The mild clean flavor of the pork is just heavenly. Topped with some freshly cut sides. Now, this is a place I would come again and again. Most definitely would recommend to my friends and family. And if out of town, this place deserves a special trip.

Two Lights Seafood & Oyster, Chicago, IL

Two Lights, Chicago, Old Town

Two Lights Seafood & Oyster

Located in Old Town, this fairly new establishment has the heart of many surrounding locals. A place that has finesse and style. As soon as you walk in those doors, you immediately are greeted by a smile and good decor. New and trendy everything. Did their food match up though?

Here is the breakdown:

Hamachi Tiradito: 3/5  I thought it was very beautifully presented, but the finesse of the dish didn’t translate onto my palette. There were a lot of different flavors in the mix of one plate, and I was really rooting for it. It had hearts of palm, avocado creme, red finger hot chili, passion fruit, and macadamia.

Old town, fish, two lights

Tuna Poke Tacos: 5/5! This I would totally come back for again! The portions are a bit small but are packed with a lot of flavor. The shell was added texture and had a good crunch. It has avocado, tuna, spicy mayo in a wonton shell.

seafood, Chicago, old town

Grilled Spanish Octopus: 4/5. Almost died eating this. I mean literally. One of the pepper flakes went straight down my throat causing me to cough uncontrollably. Apparently the pepper flake sly dogged me and caught me off guard. I proceeded to chug everyone’s water to wash away the unforgivable chili flake. And that is the story of my first bite. Aside from the embarrassing scene, I continued to eat the octopus and was pleased with the tenderness and flavor. The moral of the story, watch out for those pepper flakes.

Whipped Crab Dip: 3/5. Made with Greek Yogurt, Dill-Vinegar Kennebec Chips, I felt there was a lack of flavor, maybe more so a lack of salt.

Oysters with Old Bay and Rhubarb Mignonette: 4.5/5 So usually I don’t go for oysters that are not in season. But decided to try them anyway because the sauces are uniquely made. One with a bit of vodka, and the other with rhubarb. Both very good sauces. The oysters were very small but packed with flavor, mild and a bit sweet.

Chicago, Old Town, Seafood

Overall this place is rated 3.5 in my book. This restaurant is very aesthetically pleasing and trendy. Food looks amazing when it comes out, unfortunately some dishes did not meet my expectations but I would recommend checking out this place and trying out the dishes out for yourself!

Pho Thien Vietnamese Kitchen, Naperville, IL

Pho Thien

About Pho

Pho, pronounced as (Fuh) has become very popular over the American population. It is defiantly one of my favorite Vietnamese dishes. I think I owe it to my kids for becoming a pho connoisseur because that is the only thing we order when we go out. I have been eating it once or twice a week at different places and have developed an appreciation for the variations of this dish, but not all Pho is good Pho and that is why I do my research.

Pho Thien Vietnamese Kitchen has become one of my favorite Pho restaurants in the suburbs. The place is clean, and staff is very friendly. The atmosphere is casual and family-friendly. The food is great too!

Here is the breakdown:

Pho Tai (Flank steak and noodles): 4.5/5. Very clean taste, the broth is smooth and beefy. When the soup comes out, the noodles are not clumped together. This is a good thing! They should never be clumped together, that’s a sign that the noodles were either overcooked or a certain technique wasn’t used properly to keep them from sticking together. If you are a beginner and had never tried Pho before, this is a great place to start. The broth is the main element in the dish and when it is bursting in flavor, you know it was done right.

Canh Ga Chien Nuoc Mam – House Special Wings: 4/5 Marinated in fish sauce, then fried, these are delightful and mild. Every bite begins with a crunchy, followed by juicy meat.

Naperville, Illinois

Strawberry smoothie with boba: 5/5 This is by far the MOST beautiful smoothie presented in a Vietnamese restaurant. You will usually see the typical plastic cup and lid, but not here! They put your smoothie in a mason jar, which then has a chalkboard label with their name written in chalk. It doesn’t stop there. The smoothie is then topped off with whipped cream and a straw. And the flavor is on point. They use all natural ingredients, everything from scratch and non of that fake flavoring. I was very pleased to say the least.

Below you will see the beautifully presented smoothie in hand. Along with their Passion fruit iced green tea. Also very good!

Naperville, Smoothie, Boba

I would rate this place a 4 out of 5, it is delicious every time we come here and my kids love it. (That means a lot, and I mean a lot. They are the most pickiest eaters out there!) If you are venturing out of your typical Tuesday night dinner, I would recommend trying out this restaurant for a change. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Let me know where your favorite Pho restauraunt is in the comments below!

Yuzu, Best Sushi Restaurant in Chicago, IL

Yuzu

About Yuzu

Are you still looking for the best sushi restaurant in Chicago?! Look no further, you’ve come to the right place!

I have been here more than twice and with confidence, I can say that this place really loves their customers. They treat everyone with respect and even if you don’t have a reserved table, they will still try to seat you between reservations. With the respect they show their customers, you know they are putting the same time and effort into their food. So everyone gets a chance to eat at Yuzu.

The atmosphere in this little restaurant located in Ukrainian Village is very trendy. It’s where a lot of young people go to have a good time, eat good food, and have rap music in the background make up the rest of the vibes.

rich, uni, salmon

A little back story

I was in Japan in 2016 for a short business trip. I couldn’t believe I was in Japan, the place where sushi was born. A bit taken back at the variety the restaurants offered, sushi rolls were actually more of an american thing. Of course, the idea of a sushi roll in Japan is as simple as nori, rice, and fish. But I wanted my Godzilla roll and I don’t think that is a thing in Japan.

Anyways, long story short, we were engulfed by the Japanese culture and food trends and before we knew it, we were only ordering sashimi and nigiri like pros. So that it where our appreciation for fish and rice began.

Now by this time, we have been to many different sushi restaurants. And have a good sense of what nigiri is suppose to taste and look like. And I was eager to try Yuzu.

Here is the breakdown:

Salmon, Zuke Sake, Yuzu Albacore, Super White Tuna Nigiri: 5 out of 5! Where do I begin?! The rice was just the right temperature, with just the right amount of sweetness and tartness. The fish was given in generous portions (As shown above). And right in between the rice and fish was a tiny bit of wasabi paste. This step is vital because this elevates the flavor to another level. Every time I took a bite, I sank in my seat, closed my eyes and gave my taste buds the full experience. The fish just melts in your mouth, that’s how good the fish was. Disintegrates, gone. All of them were so good.

Dragon Ball Yuzu Jumbo Roll: 5 out of 5! Holy cow. The art that comes along with the sushi is unreal! Not only do they decorate your plate with some amazing art, the sushi rolls are delicious.

Uni shot: 5 out of 5! Yo, if you haven’t tried an Uni shot, I suggest you come try it here. It will definitely set the bar high. I was surely blown away by this small shot. It went down very smoothly and I honestly thought I was eating frosting from a cake, just because it was super creamy.

Robata: 5 out of 5! I love these little skewers, they remind me of Japan. My favorite was beef short rib. It was so tender and juicy, the seasoning was perfect, and the flavor packed a punch. You really can’t go wrong with these small skewers, but the beef short rib exceeded my expectations and was very pleasing.

Final thought

Overall, my score of this restaurant is a solid 5. This is a place I would travel to even if I lived in another state of even country. The prices are fairly low and you can get a lot of food while still keeping your wallet happy. I would totally recommend coming here for lunch or dinner, because you won’t be disappointed!

If you have any favorite sushi restaurant, please let me know down below! I would love to hear what your 5 star restaurant is!

In the summer, my kids like to dip their little toes into the ponds or rushing water creeks to cool off during a hot day. Whatever the age and activity, there is fun for everyone. Be sure to bring a hat, comfy shoes, and some water bottles!

After the Children’s Garden, we like to get lost in the famous hedge wall maze. There is a lookout that you find within the maze. Once you get on top, the view is amazing. This is one thing you do not want to miss when your visit the Morton Arboretum. I warn you, stay close to your running children, because you will lose them and then end up shouting their name over and over again until you find them. Let’s just say I underestimated this maze.

If you think spring and summer is gorgeous, wait till you see fall at the Morton Arboretum. Yellow, red, and orange leaves fill the forests. The beautiful colors are breathtaking. This is when we venture out by car into the deep woods with the windows down, music off. Just listen to the birds chirping, and the buzzing cicadas.

Either by car or bike, you will see the preserved forest in all of its beauty. Make sure to stop at one or more areas of interest and walk by foot into the woods. My tip is to take some bug spray with you because the mosquitoes are no joke.

If you are in Lisle, IL during the fall, this is a must-visit.
